普通百姓刘成（刘佩琦）为让从小拉小提琴的儿子刘小春（唐韵）的小提琴技艺有较大提升，带着他从江南来到北京，拜了性格怪异的江老师（王志文）为师，在学习过程中，刘小春逐渐与江老师成为忘年好友。风情万种的莉莉（陈红）与刘成父子俩住得很近，她让刘小春逐渐萌发生出莫名的爱恋。 刘成偶然聆听过一位年轻人的精彩演奏后，登门拜访了其恩师余教授（陈凯歌），并说服对方收下刘小春为徒。刘小春怀着无奈与遗憾离开了江老师，投身余教授门下，却只收获了束缚与压抑，他开始怀疑“父亲的选择”，与父亲的关系越变越紧张。
