Three months after the Frobisher settlement, Patty is concentrating on establishing a charitable foundation when an old boyfriend, named Daniel Purcell, contacts her and entangles her in a new case involving corporate fraud and greed. Meanwhile, Ellen continues working with the FBI to destroy Patty, but she becomes more rash and impatient as she continues to set up her appearances to hide her rage behind fabricated grief in the wake of David's murder. Elsewhere, Arthur Frobisher is revealed to have survived the assassination attempt and is recovering in seclusion as he plots his next move against all the people whom he felt wronged him.

　　As the 8th season begins, nothing in the firm is as we remember. Bobby, Linsay, Rebecca and Lucy are all gone, leaving Ellenor, Eugene and Jimmy at the helm. Ellenor also hires an old friend, attorney Alan Shore, recently fired from his firm for embezzlement. Jimmy and and Eugene defend a woman who killed a drug dealer in her neighborhood in cold blood, desperate to stop him from selling drugs to children. Nolan attempts to clear his name by going undercover to catch his Armenian mob paymaster Derian to implicate Armstrong, who escapes from the hospital and makes a deal with Derian, tipped off by Rosalind about the cops finding his go bag. As Armstrong prepares to execute Nolan, his gun proves empty and he is shot to death; Nolan can escape and arrest Derian. Nolan and Harper get letters of reprimand in their personnel files, virtually barring promotion, and Nolan is held in the training program for an additional month and faces a disciplinary exam. Lopez is promoted detective and opts to hold off on announcing her pregnancy for a clean start as a rookie detective.
